On Friday (March 28), the bodies of Richard Samarel, 54, Lina Maria Samarel, 45, and their daughter, Samantha Samarel, were discovered in the family’s Greer mansion after a neighbor called police out of concern, the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
Details about what happened remain scarce. Investigators have not said how the trio died or whether foul play is suspected, but they have disclosed that they believe that all three passed away between 10:20AM and 11:29AM.
The sheriff’s office also noted that there is no apparent ongoing danger in the area. “There seems to be no threat to the public,” they said in a statement, per The New York Post.
Authorities said “other residents” of the house, believed to be the couple’s other children based on social media, were away at school when the incident occurred.
“More information will be released at the appropriate time once both the Coroner’s Office and this agency can further their respective investigations of this incident,” the sheriff’s office added.
According to reports, Richard and Lina Maria had been married since 2009 and shared three children. The family, originally from New Jersey, resided in a spacious six-bedroom house valued at nearly $800,000.
Richard previously worked as an equities manager for Bloomberg LP and left the company in 2007.
Lina Samarel is originally from Colombia, and her professional biography on GrowTherapy.com notes that she is “a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner and a family nurse practitioner” who is “experienced in a variety of healthcare settings, including outpatient psychiatry for adults and adolescents with mental illness and health and wellness services”.
“During her free time, Lina enjoys spending time with her husband and three children. Lina also enjoys reading and learning about new and relevant issues in Psychiatry and mental health,” the profile states. She also previously worked for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, per Fox News.
The couple’s nine-year-old daughter, Samantha, was a third-grade student at Dorman School District. She was remembered by those at her school with warmth and affection. “She was a bright light in our classroom,” the school principal said, according to Perry Funeral Home.
The coroner’s office and sheriff’s office are investigating the case.
